Abstract

<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an on-board electronic compass capable of properly keeping reliability in azimuth calculation while avoiding an increase of the number of components in providing a means for detecting magnetic noise. <P>SOLUTION: The on-board electronic compass includes a magnetic sensor 2 having three magnetic detecting elements 2a-2c for detecting magnetic components in tri-axial directions perpendicular to one another, decomposes geomagnetism applied to the magnetic sensor 2 into the magnetic components in the tri-axial directions and detects by the magnetic sensor 2. In addition, it calculates an azimuth in a vehicle advancing direction on the basis of the detected magnetic components and displays the calculated azimuth on a display device 3. In doing so, while the azimuth in the vehicle advancing direction is calculated on the basis of output signals Sx and Sy of the magnetic detecting element 2a and the magnetic detecting element 2b, whether the magnetic noise is present is monitored on the basis of a change with time of an output signal Sz of the magnetic detecting element 2c.
